Description
Grand Tourmalet is a popular ski area located in the Pyrenees Mountains of France. The resort is a combination of two ski areas, La Mongie and Barèges, offering a diverse range of slopes for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.
La Mongie:
One of the largest ski villages in the French Pyrenees, La Mongie is a purpose-built resort situated at an altitude of 1,800 meters. It offers convenient ski-in/ski-out access, allowing visitors to hit the slopes directly from their accommodations. The village features a variety of lodging options, restaurants, and shops, providing all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay.
La Mongie has a lively après-ski scene with numerous bars and pubs where skiers can relax, socialize, and enjoy live music or entertainment after a day on the slopes. There's an extensive beginners area directly from the town, and the majority of the area is suitable for beginners being mostly blue and green runs, intermediate and advanced skiers would be bored very quickly here.
Barèges:
Barèges, on the other hand, is a traditional Pyrenean village located at an altitude of 1,250 meters. It has a rich history dating back to the 18th century and offers a charming atmosphere with its old stone buildings and narrow streets. The village provides a more authentic and relaxed experience compared to La Mongie, with a selection of cozy restaurants serving traditional Pyrenean cuisine. While it doesn't offer ski-in/ski-out access, there is a convenient shuttle bus that connects Barèges to the ski lifts at Barèges Tournaboup.
