Gastein Valley

Gastein Valley, located in the Austrian state of Salzburg, is a picturesque and diverse ski area, nestled in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. 

The ski area of Gastein Valley is made up of four main ski resorts: Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein, Dorfgastein, and Sportgastein. Each resort has its own unique character and caters to different types of skiers. 

Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein are the towns connected to the largest interconnected area (82km). Skiing back to town is possible for blue skiers to Bad Gastein and red skiers for Bad Hofgastein. The next biggest collection of slopes is in Dorfgastein.

Bad Gastein, known for its Belle Époque architecture, is a traditional village with a vibrant apres ski scene. After a day on the slopes, skiers can indulge in the town's famous thermal baths and spas, offering a perfect combination of relaxation and rejuvenation. 

The town is dramatic, built on steep sides in gorge. Be very careful about the location of your accommodation because you will have to walk to/from bus stop, or the base station of the gondola or funicular.

Bad Hofgastein, situated just a few kilometers from Bad Gastein, is another charming town with a long history as a spa town. The resort offers a good range of slopes for all abilities and is well-suited for families and intermediate skiers. This is built on a more open flatter plain, and in general is more modern in style.

NOTE Beginners will most likely need to get a bus to Ski Centre Angertal, in the middle of the 2 towns, for their lessons, if they are just starting out. It's a 10- 15 min round trip but worth staying on the bus route (here)

Dorfgastein, a smaller and more tranquil village, is an ideal destination for beginners and families. The resort offers gentle slopes and a friendly atmosphere, making it perfect for those learning to ski or looking for a relaxed skiing experience. The ski area is easily accessible from the village, and there are ski bus connections available for those who want to access the larger connected area of Bad Hofgastein. 

Its roughly 15 minutes on the ski bus between all of the towns, with the exception of Sportgastein which is a 30min bus from Bad Gastein.

Sportgastein, located at a higher altitude, is known for its more challenging terrain and excellent off-piste opportunities - the pisted area is relatively limited here. Sportgastein is accessible by car or ski bus from Bad Gastein. 

Note however, the relatively low altitude of the area, means less garuntee of snow, especially if you're seeking a winter wonderland at resort level.
